At the end of the trading day, not all market share is created equal. While overall market share figures often include a mix of retail-heavy off-exchange volume, what matters most to institutional investors is where they can actually trade.

That’s why we focus on Institutional Market Share: a more relevant view of on-exchange, $1+ single-stock trading during regular hours. In the final 10 minutes of the day (excluding the closing print), IEX now ranks #3 among exchanges, handling over 10% of that volume.

This continued growth reflects IEX’s unique combination of lit and dark liquidity and the execution quality institutional traders rely on most at the end of the day. As institutional brokers look to optimize closing strategies, it’s worth revisiting how relevant IEX has become in the moments that matter most.

As IEX approaches 10% of trading in the final minutes of the day, it’s worth asking: is your routing strategy reflecting where the market is actually trading?
